video players

CCCP/MPC is all the player you need.CCCP helped develop matroska along with CoreCodec who still owns the patents.MPC is a better player for downloaded content and has loads of options.

Media player software

In response to your avoiding bad torrents article... i think it would be a good idea to add media player classic to the list of good media players... this media player has long been available free of malware and advertisements...

Fake or bad torrent files

Look at the file size, often there are several torrents for the same files, they should match. If there is a smaller size than normal or on paid sites, then it is likely bad. Many malicious feeds will have Trojans or other bad software sprinkled around many torrents, they wrote malicious files and uploaded them under many popular torrents. If the new Adobe CS suite is 275mb and the movie you want is the same size raise your suspicions. Most movies are in the DIVX format which makes CD sized (700mb or a little less as they put a DVD in a CD size file and may need two to fit a long movie. It puts the best quality that will fit on a CD). Look for good ratings and look at recurring file sizes across many list.

SUggested bit torrent sites

I suggest only using isohunt.com and thepiratebay.org i have found them to be the most secure and they generally offer good torrents watch out for thepiratebay - some of the advertising can be quite pornographic

Torrent tips

Enter a title incorrectly. Leave a letter or word out. If the results are exactly what you wrote it more than likely is a fake.

.avi torrents are an issue too!

CoralPlayer is a scam. If you go to their web site (which you really have to search for to find a way to get to the page) you will find a link that says that you can "purchase" CoralPlayer for only 95 cents. But if you read the rest of the site you will find that what you are "purchasing" is a 3 day trial. After that you are charged $19.95/month. By "purchasing" it you automatically agree to be billed after 3 days and then monthly after that. It is ludicrous that you would rent a piece of software to do something so simple as play a video and the per month price is what you would expect to pay for the average video player which you then own forever. I have seen reports of some videos claiming to require CoralPlayer to play. Apparently your ordinary player can play the part that says you need CoralPlayer to play the video. What this means is that the makers of CoralPlayer have invented a market for their software. http://www.computing.net/answers/drivers/i-cant-watch-movie-without-cora

Finding Adulterated Torrents?

If your download won't work & open when using BT to convert the file to an .exe or other type of file WinRAR, Majic ISO, and other programs. which converts torrents into .iso, .7z, .z, .rar, zip, etc., then open and install that program from WinRAR or another program, which changes the .torrent to a WinRAR openable and executable file. If, after you have converted the program and installed it, if it works, you know it was a good source. Actually, the program, Web of Trust, which shows green, yellow and red circles near the search results you come up with after using goggle search to find a suitable downloading site, a torrent site or WinRar site, with green circles, which have been rated by millions of users, which tells you instantaneously where the bad sites are located. Its the best way I know to find reputable sites and sites to stay completely of your radar. These are sites proven to provided poor results or are sites with malicious intents. Thank-you themaoman

Seeds, comments, rep of uploader

Always check the downloaders' comments - they will tell you if this is fake, malware, or bad quality upload. Also, many seeds and no comments - this could be a sign the upload is fake. Never get lured into downloading a "player required to open" a downloaded file; these are usually very bad for your computer (virus, malware, etc.). On ThePirateBay (.org), there are these tiny green or purple "rep" icons for the uploaders, especially the people who upload a lot. They will have "Trusted" or "VIP" status and you can download their stuff without worry. Similar "rep" settings in Isohunt. On Demonoid, you can not only check comments but click on uploader's id and follow the link to their uploads (some have hundreds of goodies). Hope this helps.

Fake torrent spotting

Avoid clicking results that are direct quotes of your search. (e.g., you searched for "Expendables Stallone movie" and some results include "Expendables Stallone movie". Try changing the order of words in your search so such results are more easily spotted.

tips to spot fake torrents

If your download is more than 25% or 50% done and it does not show a preview option on your torrent client it is likely fake. If you complete the download and then try to open it, it may show 700 MB for example and only play for 15 seconds before you are directed to a sight that will supply codecs (fake) or passwords (again, fake) to allow you to open the file. I suspect this may be "the man" trying to more easily track who is downloading illegally.
