Vladimir Levin, a Russian biochemist from St. Petersburg's University, was the first international Internet bank robber. From London, England, Vladimir hacked into the US Citibank financial institution internal network, stole multiple customer account numbers and PIN access codes. He then used his laptop to log on multiple times to transfer money to his bank accounts in Germany, Israel, the USA, Finland, and Holland. Vladimir was documented at transferring over $10 million USD over 18 weeks. Citibank noticed the strange account activity, and called for law enforcement intervention. Vladimir was apprehended at Heathrow airport in 1995, and later extradited to the USA. He was convicted and sentenced to three years in jail, and ordered to pay the funds back to Citibank. Four members of Levin's group pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and also served various sentences.
