Famous People of the Internet

Quiz -- Question 10 of 15

Pierre and Pam Omidyar founded a small web site in 1995 that focused on selling goods across the Web.  It later grew to be the single most successful online business in human history.

A. Bluefly.fr

B. eBay.com

C. Amazon.com

D. Kwantum.ca

The eBay story is the American dream realized.  Pierre, a French-American software programmer, was inspired by his wife and friends to build "Auctionweb", an online flea market. At first, the 1994 Auctionweb release was met with skeptical response, but interest grew as people began to adopt the Internet as a place of legitimate business.

Pierre later changed the name to "eBay" (with a lower case e), and collectors around North America began to frequent Pierre's web site. As many of you know, eBay has now grown to be the ultimate flea market. eBay crosses international boundaries, and helps people sell cars, houses, real estate, artwork, and millions of consumer products, all in a special environment of trust and electronic business.

Today, eBay transacts nearly $60 million USD in sales every day, seven days a week.  Pierre and his eBay team charge 1.5% commission on every sale.
