What Is a Good Internet Connection Speed?

By September 7, 2011

Follow me on:

My wife and I are on cable Broadband 100, which means we get approximately 100 megabits-per-second download speeds. 100mbps is currently the fastest modern-day connection that you can get for wired home service in North America. While most of you don't need 100mbps, you should be getting at least 8 megabits per second to consider yourself a modern user. Anything less than 8 mbps is slow.

Here is a visually-pleasing way to test your internet connection speed. Speedtest.net is a Flash-Javascript tool by the people who made Ookla. Use this free tool to measure your internet service provider.

(9) To Robert says:

To Robert:
You speed is pretty fast, so the fact that you have trouble opening pages could be the browser you use, could be the amount of RAM you have, the CPU you have. It could be anything related to that, because that fast internet shouldn’t have any trouble opening any internet related things. The only other reason would be a BUNCH of people on, and by a bunch, I mean 10 or more.

When I download, my speed never passes 80kb/s and is often much slower. I have AT&T, what do you think could be my problem? My laptop is Windows 7 and is less then a year old and is practically new. My top resolution watching YouTube is 360p and even then I often have to let it load. I’m using a Belkin(300) wireless router, not sure about the modem. I live in Indianapolis.

(53) Common Sense says:

Some of your numbers are way to low for broadband.

Its good practice to Reboot (unplug for 60 secs then plug back in) your modem and router once a month for a fresh connection. That helps tenfold with renewing your speed and latency, especially if you haven’t done so in awhile. Which I guarantee is half of the above posters issues with speed problems.

many of you wonder why your actual download speed is never the speed shown from the bandwidth testing result, usually much slower. Your bandwidth test result shows the cap speed(at the time of test) on your end, you must consider the upload speed of the source location as well the traffic in between.

for those of you who get really small dl/ul numbers, it is either your have very slow connection or someone on your network is uploading at max speed via torrent programs LOL

(67) Ben says:

Well, Joy, there are factors that can affect your internet connection, and looking at your problems, this could be a case of you might have viruses in your computer, if you cant have more than one page open at a time, could you tell me which operating system you’re using and which browser you’re using?

Also, your router can be the issue as well if you’re having slow internet issues, what brand is your router? Whats the model number of your router?

Have you tried other wifi/internet devices? Is the internet fast on them? If its only slow on your computer, my guess is that you have a virus.

Actully, your router looks fine to me, if it gives those speeds at that low ping <50 ( under 50 )

(71) Susan Reid says:

If I do the test from a location that is close to me I get about twice what I pay for right now. I pay for 45 Mbps and I get around 94. If I do it from a location that is farther away it is extremely low maybe 6 Mbps. Does it mean anything? Another service provider wants me to switch over and I would be paying for 50 Mbps for less money. I am so confused and don’t know what to do. I almost think that my current provider who knows that I’m thinking of switching over made my connection faster so that I don’t switch over. Any suggestions or can someone explain to me if my connection sounds good? Would 50 be just as good?

Has anyone ever had that before? I woke up and it was intermittent. I hadn’t rebooted my computer for 9 days.

I’m in Korea my test showed ping 4 ms 51 download and 24 upload and that’s using a wireless connection. I think I might have a better score if I was using my wired connection. I pay only 30 dollars a month.

My connection speed according to the Roadrunner site is, 6.24 Download and 1.07 Upload with a Ping of 25 ms. Is this extremely slow? I have no other options where I live except for Dish or Directv. I know they cap their data and I need unlimited. Any suggestions to speed things up?

I find all this confusing. I tested on speedtest.net and got 44.24 for download and 11.67 for upload and Ping(?) 8. Very simply, what does this mean?

How is it going mate. Ive got a good question here. I live in panama city Panama in Central America. Today I contacted my internet service provider and asked them to come and set up a 9MBps connection at my apartment. I told them not to bring their rauter cuz I want to buy a rauter thats better than theirs. Lol now see will it be a good idea to buy a Gigabit rauter because I love Gaming mate. And I want the most steady connection I could get. No lag and to host most of my games. Ive been told that you can do a few good tweaks with a nice gigabit rauter to increase the speed of mbps. Tell me some details cheeers.
