What Does HMU Mean?

Use the HMU acronym only in informal texts and other online messaging

HMU is an online acronym for Hit Me Up. It's used to say "contact me," "text me," "phone me," or some other version of "reach me to follow up on this."

It's a modern shorthand way to invite a person to communicate with you further, but not right now. HMU is internet slang that might be used during online chatting, texting, informal email, and instant messaging. You won't (or shouldn't) encounter it in any business or professional communications, though.

The HMU expression, like other internet expressions, is a part of online conversation culture. Like any human group behavior, speech and language expressions are used to build cultural identity through customized language and unique conversational expressions.

This acronym has also been used in jest to mean Hold My Unicorn, but it's not the most common usage for HMU.

History of HMU

HMU once meant "that person asked me for something," as in "David hits me up for a small loan every Friday night." However, sometime in 2009, the expression morphed to mean "communicate with me further."

The Hold My Unicorn version of HMU might have been first seen in 2010 on Urban Dictionary.

Spelling

HMU can also be spelled in all lowercase letters as hmu. Both uppercase and lowercase versions mean the same thing, and you can use either given the internet's relative informality.

Avoid typing entire sentences in uppercase, however, because that's considered rude and is interpreted as shouting online.
